The festivities of Christmas are now behind us, but on the Christian calendar, Christmas is not just one day. Instead, Christmas is a season lasting 12 days. Jan. 6, for Christians in the west, marks the end of Christmas and the celebration of Epiphany – one of the important dates in our liturgical calendar. Epiphany marks the visit of the three “wise men” who brought gifts for the king. Matthew calls them Magi and they represent all of us “outsiders” who now find ourselves worshiping Israel’s king. They are a reminder that in contrast to the violent kingdom of Herod, there is another peaceable kingdom that we are called to follow. Emmanuel – “God with us” in all of life – is good news for all the world. This is good news for a New Year!
